That struck me as an overstatement too. BUT: that battle is often cited as on of the crucial ones that determined much of the rest of Western history. Because of it, Germany and eastern Europe were never Romanized and remained "different" from western Europe until recently. And still are to some extent (although modern communications is wearing the differences down).
