Having brutal, corrupt dictatorships on the security council is like having members of the Mafia running the FBI.

Bingo... But do to the manner in which the UN was created, the USSR was made a permanent member, totalitarian state that it was.

And as a result, the only UN sanctioned deployment of forces to counter despots was during the Korean war, when the USSR, in a major mistake, chose to abstain, and not veto the UN expedition to stop N. Korea. That never happened again until Desert Storm (when the newly "democratic" Russian republic could do nothing but hope that they would still be able to hold that $8 billion "note" that Saddam owes them).

But Syria was one of the rotating presidents of the security council just this past June. This is RIDICULOUS and as you stated, no non-democratic nation should be permitted to be a member of the security council.
