one, IMO pitchers don't 'earn' strike zones (like Michael Jordan 'earned' personal foul calls). some umps just have a wide zone. the guys who give Maddox a big zone give it to the other guy too.

two, if pitchers do in fact 'earn' strike zones, what else would you have Troy Percival do to earn his? guy has been a premiere closer for 7 years; the only guys who are better right now are Hoffman and Rivera. 250 career saves, over 30 every year but one, and a 2.95 career ERA including a buck ninety-two this year. there are a couple of guys who can play this game outside of New York, Atlanta and Boston you know (although you'd never know it as they never get a chance to play on TV).

btw, Jeter's 'patented' deep-in-the-hole play. you know why Jeter has a patent on that? 'cause Miguel Tejada would have moved laterally, caught the ball in front of him in the middle of the dirt, and made an easy throw to 1B to get the out. only Jeter and tree sloths need to make that play 'deep in the hole'.

Cheers
