OK. Yeah, but parties get away with what they can. There's no law that says Davis could not knock in the Republican primary the guy most likely to beat him, so he did.

But there is a NJ law that says the Democrats cannot change candidates this late.

We know both sides will take whatever advantage they can get. Not uncommonly, they would assassinate each other if they could. In other countries, they do just that. This used to be one of PRI's favorite campaign tactics in Mexican elections. It was literally worth your life to mount a serious challenge to the PRI candidate. That's why rules are needed to govern these contests.

Not if we're going to have these rules, shouldn't they be adhered to? Particularly a cheap, transparent trick like this?
