A murderer might be more salvageable, but probably not those whose early childhood was spent in the daycare pits of America.

Geez, "daycare pits of America". The only way to solve that is for 1 parent to be able to pay all the bills while the other looks after the kids. Sounds like a good idea buy not very good for productivity, such an important parameter in economic discussions these days...

So actually, it would make better sense to make both the parents redundant, and ship their jobs to India where qualified educated employees only get paid one tenth of the wage. Thus leaving both parents to look after the kids on welfare. Problem solved -g-

OT: I can't disagree with anything you stated Karen.

But it does strike me as odd that your views seem to contradict your initial comments about how putting people in prison creates more crime, or doesn't decrease it...

I say they already have the criminal mentality already and the only social solution is to contain and segregate them. If we don't they will commit even more crime.

Personally, I would like to put the violent ones on a remote island in the S. Atlantic (maybe South Georgia Island) and let them make their own home there (ala Escape from New York).

Something like that would seem to be the ultimate version of "scared straight"... But call me "conservative" on that particular issue.. :0)

But I do agree that there are reforms that need to be initiated in prison, with more emphasis on education and technical training so at least, when they get out, they have some skills. But so much more needs to be done in the realm of socialization skills and the expectations that society has of everyone, and especially ex-cons (so they truly become ex-cons).

And btw, children "dumped" into day care centers may, or may not, be socially disconnected. I don't believe that's the issue since many middle class parents do exactly that every day.

The real issue, IMO, is failing to hold parents accountable.. So many fatherless families, drug use by both parents, and a gangland stigma against bettering oneself or children over the rest of the "'hood" would seem to be more the issue here.

I've been in some pretty poor parts of Latin America, where people don't have running water, electricity, and their only facilities are outhouses and a dirty river to bath in.

But I didn't see nearly the criminality, or socio-pathic behavior that we find in many inner city youths who have far more.

So I guess everything is relative...
