O'Neill was a tough, serious, dedicated guy, and one who deserves the accolades he's gotten.

That said, there's a bit of the Bob Baer problem here--one gets to hear the complaints of the disgruntled cowboy operator about his wimpy bureaucratic bosses, but doesn't necessarily hear the other side of the story. I'm not saying that the bosses are always right--hardly--just that the stories of the romantic loner "Dirty Harry" types are sometimes a bit too good to be true, and that a full airing of all the relevant facts is necessary before one can draw conclusions. Those interested in the FBI side of the counterterrorism issue in the '90s might want to check out the Benjamin/Simon book I recommended a little while ago, "The Age of Sacred Terror," which gives the WH side of the story. It would be interesting to see where it agrees and disagrees with O'Neill's perspective...
