I'll save you some money, and some time. I just subscribed to The Economist, and searched out the article, using the search terms "bin Laden" AND CIA AND Afghanistan AND training. It turned up six articles. This is probably the one you are referring to: "A bitter harvest", Sep 15th 2001.

Turns out I was right, the article does NOT state that the CIA gave bin Laden money or training.

It says the usual, that the CIA funded and trained the mujahideen, and that bin Laden fought with the mujuahideen.

If you don't believe me, go to the library or pay for your own subscription. I don't usually post paid subscription articles online, and in your case, I see no reason to make an exception.

You can purchase instant access to that article for less than $10.

US aid and training to Bin Laden in times of Soviet invasion?

Hi zonder,

We beat this topic to death months ago -- I agree 100% with CB. :o)

Try the (crummy) search function a few times and you can probably turn up some interesting discussions we hadway back when...

Zonder, I "googled" it just now, and turned up this from an source, which I believe to be "Anti-CIA."

>>>Around the same time, a source of private funding was sought for the war. Osama bin Laden, a man with "impeccable Saudi credentials" (his father's construction company had just been awarded a contract to rebuild and restore the holy sites in Mecca and Medina) was given "free rein in Afghanistan" by the CIA. Using his share of his family's business empire, he built training camps and airplane landing strips, and carved underground bunkers in the mountains of Afghanistan, all with Washington's approval.<<<

One of the advantages of Bin Ladin to us during the Afghanistan/Russia was was that he "did not need no stinking money!"

Zonder, you are the one who says that the Economist had that article. If they did, then find it and post it. If you cannot, I think we are all going to assume that the article does not exist and you are blowing smoke up..........
