I think if s/he did it inadvertently, s/he will apologize, thus separating him or herself from citizenship in the universe of the feral.

FWIW, my informal tracking over the years has demonstrated that very rarely is anyone ashamed. Perhaps there are more ferals in Washington, where I have had most of my door experiences, than elsewhere. I've certainly encountered a lot. <g> Those whose consciences reacted to my "thank you" have been few and generally older.
