I'd say Ford American built trucks are only second to the Toyota Landcruiser.

Just a personal opinion. It's great working on such a vehicle. This is from a guy who grew up owning British minis. Just try changing the water pump on those things. -g-

Ork, you have to buy the right model US car. American V-8 s are quite durable. Ford Crown Victoria is a good car. Mike

Yes on that quality issue.

I had a '91 Ranger - got it new, went to 136k when the spedo cable broke. It ran when I traded it, but the list of needed repairs was growing by the day. Had the auto loc hubs, never knew if you were in loc until it was too late. I think they had a problem with the 4.0v6 internal coolant flow as this one and others I know overheated, taking out the head gaskets. Problem is, I always liked Ford's interior styling and such. Seating position, that type of thing. And it was a nice package in general. Went on to a '94 F150 which is an absolute piece of crap mechanically. At 106k the damn door hinge is so worn that its about to fall off, joining the other parts that already have.

I about choke when I see Mr. Ford JJJr talking about Ford trucks and how people have 100k and they are still going strong. NEWSFLASH. 250k is a milestone, 100k is nothing. My brother has 270k on a beat-up old Toyota, swears by the things. Check used parts prices and you'll see where the value lies.

Have thought about GM, but my good friend went from Fords to GM, and has the same quality issues, but paid more up front.

Ultimately this will be a big part of the epitaph on Detroit. I am not suprised by the trouble F is in. In fact it strikes me that the current US Mfgrs may not survive the transition away from traditional IC based vehicles.

Interesting to read the comments about the auto sales w/payout. Thats how we got our last car - a Contour - which has been OK, a good value. The prior owner had to pay out 1800 in addition to our check just to clear the title.
