The estate tax on the superrich is not an issue I really care about. The estate tax on moderate wealth attained by people living responsibly or owning a small business is bad policy IMO.

I would set the threshold at 25 or 50 million to make it a nonissue for most people. The problem with it is all the machinations available to get around it are counterproductive behavoir engaged in by bright people whose talents are better off used doing something useful. And the money raised is a drop in the bucket.

My husband works with his hands and is self-employed. He pays double Social Security taxes. It's insane, and we feel it, believe me.

I could see an argument that its a bad idea but its not insane. In many ways I pay double social security taxes as well. Certainly the cost to my employer helps depress my wage. And at the margin it might even cost jobs. It could be argued reasonably that while your husband pays double the tax I might pay 150% of it and someone at the margin who doesn't get a job because of the higher costs pays over 1000%.
