As you know, a generation of United States citizens--mine--grew up in the Vietnam era. We wrestled with Vietnam for years and finally suffered through the administration of Jimmy Carter. The humiliation of the Carter Administration was punctuated by his pathetic "general malaise" speech.

When Reagan arrived, he began the process of restoring confidence to the citizens of the United States. I joked with colleagues that we needed to find an island and wage war with it to begin the process of restoring our military. If the island was small enough, we could surround it with our Navy--so the inhabitants couldn't escape, and finally land and overwhelm it with our marines and soldiers. Needless to say, Mr. Reagan shared a similar view. I'll grant you that Grenada was small but we needed a victory. From there, we tangled with the next obvious subject--an isthmus. Yes, Panama.

Blum is excellent. That book is on my list, haven't gotten to it yet.
