Ted, Re: < This article needs to be repeated and repeated.>

How many times have I told you that if you pay attention to Buchannan you'll find a lot to like.

This article needs to be repeated and repeated.

Pat is a good conservative and says what he thinks, and I think most Republicans respsect him for that.

But he is terribly wrong on this issue.

He's asserting a right to wage pre-emptive war without the approval of Congress on any nation that aspires to build the kinds of weapons we've had since World Wars I and II. I don't think he's got the right to do that, and I think a policy of warning about pre-emptive strikes is the kind of policy that could invite pre-emptive strikes against us.

This certainly is not true. He is asserting, through the Bush Doctrine, that such a right exists -- not tremendously different in concept from the well-established Monroe Doctrine (i.e., establishing a more-or-less arbitrary line in the sand, or in the ocean, as it were).

However, there can be no pre-emption with respect to Iraq. Iraq is the aggressor nation, and thus anything we do at this point is defensive in nature, NOT pre-emptive.

The confusion on this issue is rampant, even amongst Republicans and supporters of Bush. IT ISN'T PRE-EMPTION IF YOU ARE DOING IT IN RESPONSE TO AN EXISTING THREAT. Duh.
