Yes, it's true, the lesson wasn't supposed to be Turn the Other Cheek and You'll Be Sorry.

Once I was in the subway going to Central Park with friends on a Sunday morning to have a picnic and take naps in the sun. We'd all been up late. I'd been reading a book about the power of pacifism. Stories about how turning the other cheek rilly rilly worked!

So...I saw a woman and two men, drunk. They were being boisterous and aggressive and sort of generally hostile and unpleasant.

When the woman noticed me looking at them (they were making rather a spectacle of themselves, the two men both being amorously inclined toward the lady), she glared in my direction. In the spell of the book, I knew just what to do. I gave her a Turn the Other Cheek Loving Christian Pacifist We Are All One smile. She charged over and spat on me. I guess she hadn't read the book, lol.
