Stanley Works (SWK) warned that third quarter earnings would miss expectations due to "severe production problems" in its mechanics tools business. The company now expects to earn 61 to 63 cents a share in the quarter ending September, below the average analyst forecast as compiled by Thomson First Call of 72 cents a share. The toolmaker said revenue for the period is expected to decline about 1 percent and would be "slightly" below expectations. The company also "tempered" its outlook for the fourth quarter, saying earnings and revenue would approximately year-earlier levels. The stock closed Wednesday down $1.09 at $30.53.
