Are there any estimates of how far he's been firing from, or have they been tight-lipped about that?

If he's firing from less than, say, 250 yards, he doesn't have to be terribly good to hit the target. The very basic rifle marksmanship in the U.S. Army doesn't go further than 300 yards, which is pretty easy to hit even with the iron sights of the M-16. Being accurate at that distance is another story, though.
