I don't know what led you to this conclusion. I don't think the labor movement favors communism.

I left Pittsburgh in 78. It was the beginning of the end for the steel industry as they knew it. The unions and mangagement had a cozy kind of arrangement where steel wages had gotten pretty high but with no competition and industry-wide bargaining the increases were passed on to us consumers. There was no motivation to modernize or become more efficient. A totally untrained novice steelworker (read custodian) made about $30 k I was told.
