Re: Chomksky - a friend of mine told me how when he was about 8 years old, his family and another family from academia had Chomsky over for dinner.

Even at 8 years old, it was apparent to my friend that Chomsky was both brilliant and a total nutcase - like an out of control Dr Spock or Linus Pauling, a self-appointed guru on anything and everything, but unlike someone like Richard Feynman completely lacking in modesty outside his area of competence.

Mix that in with a far leftwing political ideology and you get the picture :-)

I'm still patiently waiting on his prediction of "millions of Afghans" to be killed by our unseating the Taliban.....

Are you fairly representing Chomsky's views or are you bending them a little to make them seem more reasonable?

I have no idea. Reading Chomsky give me the hives.

I don't have a problem reading LindyBill so was responding to what he said.

I think Chomsky is verboten on the thread, but you'll have to take it up with our Fearless Leader, aka FL.

But what Chomsky claimed was that the night time bombing of the aspirin factory was an atrocity which killed thousands of Sudanese civilians. His books and speeches are filled with such claims.

Hey, it's an argument. We've seen similar claims about other events made from a myriad of political perspectives on this thread. Chomsky's wrong on the number of deaths, best I can tell.

Chomsky may well be a respected academic in the linguistics field. But when it comes to history, politics, and current events he is merely a well-read amateur - with no more claim to fame as a "thinker" than a few of the folks who post on this thread - and whose views, as well, are colored by a very radical leftist idealogy.

As opposed to what, the radical rightist ideology we get more than a little of on this thread. Chomsky's views are Chomsky's views. Let's hear them; argue about them. Not say, geez I don't wish to hear views that are outside the mainstream.
