<< What I don't understand, is why the military leaders involved did not realize what the blowing sands would do to the choppers' engines. >>

Our military bravely and patriotically went ahead as ordered and did the best they could. My heart goes out to their dedication and selflessness.

But they could not order up new helicopters and planes on two months' notice. There was no way to fully prepare for that desert operation. It was new to the US and we were not properly equipped, that much is true.

Heck Nixon and Ford were busy trying to get out of the soaking wet jungles of Vietnam; they weren't preparing our military for desert operations in the middle east.
