Bob,

That's funny. Even if Dell managed to pull all the HP drivers off their boxes, you can always download them.

I seem to remember some discussion on the pre-acquisition thread about HP being very late in updating drivers for some of their older products for the latest OSes. Maybe someone remembers more of the details.

Which isn't to say that the Dell person knew what he/she was talking about.

Dave

Okay, kids. I'm NOT getting the Lexmark printer with the new Dell. I was told by an "expert" that it was a "meadow muffin" and I should keep the HP. I was able to cancel the printer as it hadn't shipped yet. Yes - I can download new drivers, so I feel I'm better off with the HP, even if it is slow. I'll see if I can do something about that.

Many of the older all-in-one devices do not have drivers available that support XP. Some others have only "partial" support, which is to say that they will work in a rudimentary fashion, but there is no dedicated control software, making them extremely difficult to use for anything other than the most basic printing jobs.

HP put out XP drivers for the stuff that was current at the time WinXP shipped, but not for many of the older versions. Even the units that were on the shelves the day XP shipped out did not get full driver sets until this past summer, about a 9 month delay. Their website claimed that it was because they could not do development until the "final" version of the software was available. Funny, there were HP computers sitting on the retailer shelves with XP pre-installed on the day of the "official" release...

I was really pissed that I bought a new computer for my mom in January (4 months after XP shipped) and the "XP compatible" all-in-one that she bought at the same time came with only very limited drivers and an uncertain promise that they would be available eventually. Especially so when I realized that LXK, Epson and Cannon were shipping fully functional stuff and had updated drivers on their websites the day XP was released.
