Because I already know the material I can clearly see his pastiche technique in it - tending a lot towards secondary sources with a sort of cut and paste effect, but he draws together a lot of different material into a reasonably strong narrative.

Bill, my taste in history is for very well written books filled with original research. Robert Caro's biographies of LBJ are the essence of that; though E. P. Thompson on the English Working Class matches up very well; or Lawrence Stone on the English aristocracy. Thus, the techniques you talk about would certainly lead me to drop Ambrose's latest stuff. That's what my friends talked about.

Outside magazine called the alliance one of the U.S.'s hottest emerging environmental organizations. But, as the magazine pointed out, taking care of a 2,470-mile river is a huge effort. In that regard, the alliance faces a major shortcoming: With a staff of only five, it's limited in what it can accomplish.

NOTE : I find it amazing that the US spends about 500 billion per year on military defence, but has trouble coming up with money to defend one of its most important resources –WATER!

By comparison : the Great Lakes are cleaner today than they have been in 50 years, but much more needs to be done.US and Canada have a joint agreement on the Lakes, which holds 20% of the entire world’s fresh water supply.
