Douglas V Fant,
Your post is bang on with my recent thinking on Iraq. Don't know if I am getting into my personal views here or just geopolitical thinking, but in any case I believe you are correct in your assessment.

Esp. with this:

So the key to slowing down Al Qaeda is to recontruct Iraq quickly and effectively- integrate Iraq back into the world economy rapidly. Give them a stake in the status quo.

Iraq was our ally once. Don't laugh when I say that that in ten years our key ally in the Midlle East may again be....Iraq.

Maybe a lot less than ten!
Now I'm outta here before I really get in trouble, ggg!

Best Regards,

Roebear

Doug, I think you and I agree for the most part. IMHO, the air war will begin in December, with the troops going in during January. Pretty much like the last time. This time, we will take Saddam out, and then make every effort to make friends of the Iraqis. I do believe they may well become allies, perhaps sooner than you think.

It is very important in the battle against Al Qaeda that we take out Saddam decisively. They (Al Qaeda) exist with the help and support of state sponsors. Directly or indirectly. We need to show those states what is coming if they continue to give aid and support to terrorists. And we need to be somewhat ruthless about it, in spite of the handwringers and pacifists. If we do it, we can be safe again. If we fail to act decisively, we will never be safe.

I'm headed to Europe tomorrow. We will see what the real pulse is over there. Europe, like the UN, could become awfully irrelevant if they are not careful.

Do not under estimate the power of religion, especially Islam.Muslims take their beliefs Very seriously, much more so than americans and europeans, threaten those beliefs and there will be a huge backlash.Al Queda may not be main stream now but It would not take much for it to become soespecially if they are seen as being defenders of the faith watch out.I wish America would do something serious in palastine before action in Iraq.We would look alot more just in doing so.
