The Church is by nature authoritarian. That is mitigated by the fact that membership is voluntary. One has to decide whether one can abide by its rules or not. It has raised the matter of a male priesthood to a theological plane, and can no more agree that it is indifferent than it can have grape juice substitute for wine in the Eucharist. I cannot recall at what level the doctrine has been defined, there might be some slight wiggle room for change, but it has to be accepted that the decision is not ever going to be democratically resolved........
