There was a great story in the NYT magazine a couple years ago about rifles made for BMG .50 cal. ammo and the people that shoot them. They were going for an effective range of 1 mile, though it took quiet early morning conditions in the desert to manage that. 6 or 7 seconds flight time at that range. At 100 meters or so, the round would pierce 1 or 2 inches of steel armor plate. Amusingly, one of the rifles mentioned came from a little company in a small town about 5 miles from where I live.

Not much of a hunting round unless the moose was inside a bunker or something. Have any moose been sighted wearing Kevlar lately?

OT - What does one do with moose after one hunts it? Are they edible? If so, do they taste good?

My father once killed an elk, and fried it like they fry turkeys in Louisiana, in a gigantic pot full of oil, and I thought that was probably not the best way to cook it, but I was pregnant then and rather queasy. The fact that he got used oil from a donut shop did not help. Beignet shop, actually, which are sort of like donuts.

.50 cal.
I hunt moose yearly. The .50 cal. is WAY too big. It is the sign of an inexperienced hunter to be overpowered. The result of the wrong rifle is hugely damaged and wasted animal quarters. Common rifles used locally are .308, 30-06 and even old army Lee Enfield .303's which has appropriate ballistics.

Wow. Really? Moose hunting with a 30-06? I had heard Moose are like Rhino, damn tough animals, break out the cannon! :P
