Bearshark, would I be correct to assume that Virginia plates would not be unusual at all in Montgomery County, but might be further north? Similarly, would I be correct to assume that Maryland plates might be somewhat uncommon near Richmond? If so, I'm thinking this might imply the most likely of your theories is that the killer leaves east of Route 301 in Virginia County. It would explain why he chose to head south, deeper into Virginia instead of into northern Maryland.

Lastly, how often does the "average" person living in the DC suburbs -- who doesn't work in DC -- travel into DC? I'm guessing not often, unless they are entertaining out-of-town guests. One other hint this guy is a resident, and not some transient terrorist, IMO, is that he has picked residential areas that he knows better.

Are there many nondescript motels in the areas you mentioned? I believe the shooter hasn't either a close family, neighbors, or relationships in the area, or otherwise they would have been suspicious and called in to the hotline...

Have you called in your "route" thoughts to the hotline? If not, do....who knows....it might spark some additional leads for the police...
