• EDGE expected to be deployed by practically all of
our over 100 GSM customers within the next few years

Can you explain the rationale for EDGE for an older GSM operator?

As far as I know, this still requires a rather expensive upgrade to the basestation for the increased data capacity. This is at a time when the only GSM carrier I have seen report an increased amount of data usage is using imode....

The upgrade MIGHT make sense when GPRS data usage is forcing carriers to add capacity....but the reports of this in the GSM camp have been nil.

I havent always agreed with the path the GSM carriers have taken but I usually have been able to find at least some rationale....the explanation for EDGE eludes me.
