Terrorism expert on CNN today made the point that an experienced sniper would not set up at the edge of the tree line. He would set up ten or twenty yards back. This would cause the sound to be diffused so it would be harder for witnesses to be clear as to the direction the shot came from and you would have a harder time seeing the muzzle flash too.

I'd like to see all the hunters and NRA members that are good shots, gather up the binoculars and scoped varmint rifles and sit around scanning out shopping plaza lots

Good idea, turn the whole DC area into a gigantic shooting gallery.
