The quote, according to CNN, was: "To the person who left us a message at the Ponderosa last night, you gave us a telephone number. We do want to talk to you. Call us at the number you provided." Sounds to me like the killer told the police to go to a payphone and await his call. If true, kind of cliché, but I suppose it's probably better than calling the police station.

Or it could be game playing, like the Zodiac killer. Recall he left coded messages, claiming that once they were decoded, it would tell who he was. When they solved the code, it was just him thumbing his nose at them.
