Releasing all prisoners in order to curry favor with the populace seems like it would backfire, to me. He's just released into the general populace a lot of people with good reasons to hate him.

Exactly, Bush took a stand when he spoke to the UN and he has not wavered. Whatever prompted that, the results have been spectacularly successful and yes, this is because "we're willing to leave forcible overthrow as a viable option". Thanks for taking the time to give me that information and your perspective. It's shifted my perspective - maybe eight or ten degrees. Take care.
