He's just released into the general populace a lot of people with good reasons to hate him.

Indeed... but if the US shows any slackening in its desire to see Saddam's regime changed, that "gratitude" will turn into a desire for revenge.

Continue the pressure and these political prisoners will see the opportunity for obtaining their revenge upon Saddam and his cronies.
