"there has been a message from USDA that they would give the benefit of the doubt to the industry. … Bush administration officials at USDA have consistently made clear they do not believe meat processors must be held accountable for the safety of meat coming off the end of the line. Since November 2001, the undersecretary for food safety has denigrated pathogen testing and zero tolerance. Both the industry and government have put profit ahead of public health."

That's despicable. The answer of course is irradiating the meat for pathogens. Irradiating takes everything out of the meat including any benefit from eating it. Therefore, you might just as well eat the cardboard packaging. I think this is their goal anyway. Most people are unaware that bth milk products, bioengineered vegetables, unfiltered water, fluorescent lighting and irradiated foods are useless at best, harmful at worst.

And guess which state the plant responsible for the "largest meat recall ever" is located in.

PITTSBURG, Texas -- Pilgrim's Pride Corp. plummeted 25 percent after the company recalled 27.4 million pounds of chicken and turkey, the largest meat recall in U.S. history.

I'd like to know which political palms have been greased to allow such unsanitary practices to get by, because these things just don't happen when rules are adhered to in food processing.
