No, you do not need permission for "dangerous weapons". Knives are dangerous weapons. Weapons are dangerous, inherently. One needs permission for weapons which are clearly beyond the scope reasonably extrapolated from the term "arms", granting improvements in reliability and power. The Supreme Court created a bright line, many years ago, with machine guns. It is taken for granted that light arms (rifles and pistols) are genetic successors to the arms of the day, as it were......
