The New Republic: Trust Bush, Not CIA

<<...How kind of TNR to grant the CIA "the right to its opinion." But if the CIA produces only opinions, then what's the point? Let's save on the $30-plus billion devoted to the intelligence community. Let's not bother with intelligence briefings on the Hill. And let's not cite CIA estimates in pursuit of a missile defense system or a hard-line pro-Israel policy. TNR only rushes to question the CIA when its intelligence undermines the argument for war. Is it too much to expect the President's rhetoric to be in sync with US intelligence assessments? If they are not, then the President ought to explain why. After all, the historical record also shows that Bush isn't intellectually or morally infallible. Or does TNR need to be convinced of that?...>>

SFD.. we agree on nearly all the terms of a likely settlement.. but the Palestinians (or should I say Arafat) don't and that has been the problem.

They want compensation.. they want a right to return.

But you know something... I'm not quite cool with the fact that Jews would be prohibited from living in a Palestinian State. I mean.. 20% of Israeli Citizens are non-Jewish, including a hefty portion of Arabs/Palestinians.

Should Israel have the right to revoke the citizenship of all the Arabs and make them move to the Palestinian state??

As I've continually stated, the Palestinians and Israelis either have to acknowledge that they are symbiotically linked, or one side utterly subjugate or destroy the other...

That is the only way peace will exist.. And it can't exist if Palestinians can't handle Jews living within their borders and settling on unoccupied land, much as some Palestinians would like to do, but never seem to do during Jordan's rule over the area.

And I have to admit that I probably would have been personally inclined to follow the Israeli line... No peace negotiations until Arafat gets his internal security under control and stops playing footsie with the militants.

How can an atmosphere of mutual trust and benefit be created when the Israelis see attacks being carried out by militants which Arafat has tolerated and even courted and funded?? Isn't making peace under such conditions tantamount to German Jews buying their own train ticket to purchase a "timeshare" at Buchenwald or Treblinka??

How can they deal in good faith with such a man who is taking direction (and money) from Iran and Iraq, both of whom would be unwilling to see him make peace with Israel??
