I used to sleep in rest areas all the time, and still do sometimes. You don't blend in. There's not many cars that sit for long there. But, yah, that's kind of personal. If I was just going to sit and wait for them to come, I'd pick a rest area. They are well-lighted. Anyone these days (for many years) checks out all the cars there to be safe. He'd be noticed. The rest is just a gut thing... that he wanted it to end. But you've never snapped back from a mental break like that. At first I thought he was whiny to talk of the calls that didn't get thru, now I think it's possible he was just mad because he wanted it to end but couldn't do it himself. And the kid wouldn't, or couldn't, stop him. It's sad to me. I think it might be sad to him. That all those people died, and all those people are left without their loved one, because he couldn't stop. Maybe it makes us feel safer to think it's an extemist we can control, than to think it's just a man over the edge who could happen any time?
