Zonder,

The Japanese were already beaten at that point, but refused to surrender. The nukes convinced the Japanese command that they must surrender and probably saved millions.

While this may seem strange look at the estimates for Olympic:

Your comments reflect some distaste for nukes. While that is normal, realize at the time no such issue existed outside of the scientific community. Truman was faces with Plan A and millions of deaths or Plan B and a much quicker outcome.

The current feeling of immorality associated with nuclear power emerged during the cold-war.

That was thanks to two mushroom clouds over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Are you advocating the use of nuclear weapons on Muslim cities filled with civilians?

Zonder, after the Battle of Midway, it was just a matter of time...

Fatman and Littleboy only shortened the inevitable and saved countless Japanese and American lives.

But the real theme of that response was to refute the belief that we couldn't "win" a war on terrorism... To defeat terrorism means we have to defeat the source of it, Islamic militancy.

That means we'll eventually be required to overthrow the Wahhabbis in Saudi Arabia, preferably through another Arab entity such as the Hashemites. But first we have to deal with Saddam.. or should I just say all the baathists, which includes Syria.

Then we'll need to provide an example of how western economics can make their lives better, convincing them that moderate Islam can work with western economics.

Also,.. let's not forget the human aspect of this war.. There are clerics and scholars out there advocating this form of militancy. They must be denounced and isolated, and in many cases, eliminated. They would do the same to us, given 1/2 a chance..
