That's why isolationism worries me. Debt, deflation, and isolationism all together look like a bad rerun to me.

I agree with you that I am not an economist, but one does not have to be an economist to enjoy or understand economic history, particularly if you are willing to do some heavy lifting by reading the really bright ones.

My inability to do math means I cannot study advanced economics in universities, but I can still read the books.
