From what I remember, the fighter jets were next to the plane in just 20 minutes at 30,000+ feet after communication was lost.

The plane was still over Florida and that's why jets from Florida were the first scrambled to make contact.

Please note that the Payne Stewart flight was a non-commercial flight. So GV may be right about his claim.

I am sure someone knows the procedures for commercial flights. So we can settle this matter conclusively.

As I recall, the plane was over Tennessee (from Florida) by the time Air Force jets caught up with it and pulled alongside.
