An interesting post. I agree with it all except the first bit. After WW1 and the 30's, most normal people were completely against war and did not trust "big business" and government. Joe Kennedy is a good example why.

The unions and government were penetrated or overrun with the commies and organized crime.

It would have been impossible to fight a war against Hitler if Russia and Germany were still buddies, and with the peace nicks asking whether all the strife and suffering was worth it. The commies would have had those well organized before long too.

To get a nation, either the USA or the UK, to get it's citizens to fight shoulder to shoulder, in a war that would see all sorts of suffering... Well, the reasons had to stand out like a sore thumb. Governments also had to show they were interested in peace more then anything to be trusted. It took the invasion of Poland, The Battle of the Atlantic, Pearl Harbor, and the invasion of Russia to get the ball moving to the advantage of the allies.

Anyway here is "Letter from America" from Alistair Cooke.

His art of persuasion is still the best. Very pro USA guy who has been sending a report to Britain on America since WW2. I think you will like reading his stuff.

He is a hard guy to argue against, even in his very old age.

But since the nagging, unrelieved tension invoked by al-Qaeda and Saddam I've adopted a rule - no "shop" after 6pm.

You've got another 30 mins or so, then change the subject to something more palatable -g-
