it's always some broad brush thing where "liberals" in general are somehow responsible for the utterances of some particular "leftist",

No Win.. ONCE AGAIN.. you miss the point...

It's not about some moron like Belafonte sticking his foot in his mouth...

It's about YOU and OTHER LIBERALS sticking your necks out to DEFEND HIM...

That's what "get's my goat"... You're willing to excuse his behavior, not admonish him..

I haven't seen even ONE liberal out here admonish him or indicate that he should apologize for his remarks.

Nope... just a bunch of half-hearted excuses and justifications imploring us to "understand"..

Yeah.. I understand alright... I understand that for all of your high moral values, you don't have the guts or moral integrity to fight more than a "selective war" on racism..

Win,

Like you, I don't read the op ed columns all that much. I have my weekly favorites and that's about it. For a while I read the op ed stuff that gets posted here from The Weekly Standard, National Review, et al, but, at best, I skim now. No one says anything interesting. I'm left with Novak and Safire for that sort of writing. Novak has, as an aside, a nice column on Wellstone today. Much, much better than the usual Wellstone was a well meaning, decent but mentally a bit slow stuff.

As for the focus on the left, it seems to be an obsession. I agree on the "broad brush" stuff and, as well, the creation of some composite position to which only the fewest might subscribe, and then to attack that. As if a columnist identified as being on the left picked out a particularly odd position of Jerry Falwell's, then argued that since it was characteristic of the right, well, . . .

Much of it, including the Belafonte stuff, is too many right wing op ed columnists needing to find fresh material.
