"Air defense around Washington is provided mainly by fighter planes from Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland near the District of Columbia border. The D.C. Air National Guard is also based there and equipped with F-16 fighter planes, a National Guard spokesman said.

But I highly doubt they had birds on 24 hour instant response "locked and cocked" with pilots standing by in the ready room. I have no doubt they do NOW, but not then..

That's just not the way they work...

But even if they were ready, the order would have to go out from the DC Adjutant General (the guy standing in the middle) because national guard units are state militias, who's commander in chief are the state governors (although Bush is the CinC of the DC guard) until formally federalized under Title 10:

So if you're going to blame anyone.. blame him and DC's mayor..

As for the USMCR air wing... it pretty applies to both.. They are not designed to be on 24 hour alert in peacetime. The "hundreds" of support personnel are mechanics, firemen, fuelers, and other people who work on "technician" or AGR status..

They generally aren't pilots, they normally being "weekend warriors".

Your posts raised logical questions. Normal people would stop and think about it. But someone always anxious to subdue rational questions like this_with claims. Hmmmm... Are they also happen to be those who keep urging U.S. very hard to move troops to the Middle east?

J_O: Surely you can't be serious...There are serious news sources out there, and they too have bias, but this is a non-serious source, that no one could or should take seriously.

For instance....Look at the words of this "headline"...Do you think the words here are trying to imply anything???

Whoever wrote the 'so called article' ought to be ashamed. Paul Wellstone was a liberal man, and from nearly all people was honest in his convictions.

Anti-War Senator Killed In Plane Crash - Senator Paul Wellstone, his wife, and his two daughters were killed today in a plane crash in northern Minnesota. Wellstone was the only Senate incumbent in a tight race to vote against President Bush's resolution to invade Iraq. See... Senator Wellstone, Minnesota, Dies In Plane Crash
