Good review. I knew Kass, slightly. He and his wife were at St. John's for a couple of years when I was there. He is a thoughtful fellow, and has provided some useful insights over the years.....

I take the author's point about the utility of bioethicists as they have evolved. I would imagine that they function as they do because that's the way they're compensated. If they were to function as the author suggests, who would pay them.

I would accept that they are useless as is, but I don't think we'd want them performing as he suggests. That's the job of individuals, family, doctors as informed by their spiritual advisors. Liberty, equality, and dignity in this scenario are a function of individual choice over one's person, IMO.
