Those Cuban escapees aren't exactly helped along their way by the Castro gov't, Poet. In fact, it is illegal for them to leave and the gov't tries to prevent it. If they are caught attempting to leave, they can expect jail. GIven that, I'd say "escapee" is an accurate description. I see no difference between them and Germans coming over (or under or through or whatever) the Berlin Wall. Who are you talking to? Certainly this isn't a response to any view I've posted. That is in support of the use of the word "escapee" which you took issue with.
