SEC Expands Probe to Webster's Work on Audit Panel

>>> From Bloomberg News:

Washington: The Securities and Exchange Commission expanded its review of former FBI Director William Webster's selection as chairman of a new accounting oversight board to include his work on the audit committee of an Internet company sued for fraud.

The inquiry will look at Webster's work as chairman of the audit committee of U.S. Technologies Inc., said SEC Commissioner Cynthia Glassman and other SEC officials. From April 2000 to last July, Webster ran the three-member audit committee of the company whose financial controls were criticized by its outside auditor.

``I'm hoping it can be done quickly,'' said Glassman. ``We're trying to find out what actually happened.''

Inquiries into SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt's handling of Webster's selection to head the U.S. accounting panel have drawn criticism from members of Congress from both parties, and renewed calls from Democrats for his resignation, four days before congressional elections. Pitt, a Republican, failed to tell the White House and the four other SEC commissioners about Webster's work on the audit committee before the SEC voted 3-2 a week ago to pick Webster.
