I can tell you the exact day and show you the artice because I bookmarked it.kitco.com To change the subject, being prompted by a friend of mine who now lives in Australia but who was in the same trade as I once was, I have done some calculations on the Moscow theatre incident. I post my email to him here for your interest. Mass anaesthesia! You have forced me to do so homework. PS. Don't get a shock as you read this to realize what you once knew or should have. 1 MAC Halothane = 0.75% (ie to anaesthetise 50% patients). According to Eger, at 0.85% Halothane, all patients will be unconscious. So, let's aim at 1%, just to be sure, but I'm sure at 0.5% no-one will have critical faculties, which is as I remember. Molecular Wt Halothane = 197 (say 200) Therefore 200 gm Halothane produces 22.4 L vapour (@ 100%) Therefore 1 kg halothane produces 22.4 X 5 = 122 L vapour @ 100% or 12,200 L vapour @ 1% concentration Thus 1 kg halothane produces 12.2 cu metres vapour @ 1% concencentration. Now, how big is the theatre? There were 800 + people there so let's say capacity is 1000 people. Actually, that's not very big eg 30 rows of 35 seats. I estimate the seating per person will take 1.2 sq metres each, which is a lot ie 4' x 3' +. To that I will add 0.3 sq.metres per person for isles, stage, backstage etc That brings us to 1.5 sq. m. per person Total floor area is therefore 1.5 X 1000 = 1,500 sq. metres. I don't believe a theatre has an average height greater than three storeys. It may not even be three storeys where the stage is but certainly not at the back, which is elevated so that the audience can see. All the same, let's say the height is 10 metres (3 storeys). That gives a volume in the theatre of 1500 X 10 = 15,000 cu. metres. Therefore amount halothane required @ 1% conc = 15,000 / 12.2 = 1,230 kg S.G. Halothane = 1.9 Therefore volume halothane liquid required = 1,230 / 1.9 = 647 Litres Which is approx. 160 gallons ie 3.6 X 44 gallon drums! I guess they must have used a type of crop sprayer to vaporise 3.6 drums of halothane liquid into the airconditioning ---- but it's not so fantastic an exercise. I'm sure they could have fitted a small pump etc to a truck with a long pipe and stuck it into the inlet vent for the air- con. In a way, it must have been fun for the guys who did it. Then, one never knows, they may have also put a small "premed" into the food. I would have. And certainly, because of the apparent reversal achieved by narcan in the hospital later, it could well have been an opiate, although I would have used pentobarbital.
