C & KC,

It depends on the province, OHIP charges, MSI doesn't. In NS the sales tax used to be called the Hospital tax and was used for funding.

As someone who has used both systems - I would rather be gainfully employed in the US and have medical care here. If I was unemployed I would rather live in Canada.

BTW - Canadians don't need a separate private system - they just cross the border - and lots of wealthy Canadians do that. Check out the medical adds in Southern Ontario for clinics in the Buffalo Niagra region. The Vermont system has a lot of Montrealers coming down etc.

The bill boards on the QEW advertise US medical facilities, particularly MRI and Catscan services. On I-190 leading to the Peace bridge (and Canada), they advertise Casino's.

You two have discussed this before, but the Canadian system is no panacea - the government keeps no statistics on how many people die waiting on surgery etc. Abuse of the system is rampant when no fee's are charged. Canadians can and do go to the Emergency room for minor aches and pains.

The US 'system' is also dysfunctional in that people fall through its very large cracks. But at the top it provides the best care in the world and funds most of the worlds medical research.

Perhaps we should have our NZ and Aussie friends share a little of their systems for new ideas.

My sister lived in Japan for 10 years and loved their health care system. Its a National System, but has co-pays (with annual limits). She thought it was a good compromise between the US and Canadian models.
