<Now of course I am looking to pick out negative teachings just because you seem to have a euphoric view of the major religions...>

No no... I have a 'non-negative' view of the TEACHINGS... I have a very negative view of lots of religious practices... through history and currently. I also have a positive view of some religious practices, I think there is much there, especially in some of the Eastern religions.

Bottom line IMO: Just as those on the flip side, for one to have a strongly negative view of 'religion' as a bundle... one MUST have a strong opinion of what religion IS. So the shrill people against religion are really the same as those for... very opinionated and ignorant as to what religion means and is. And of course since this IS so different [for Mq it seems to be an old man with a beard barking out orders for the masses to follow] even within religions, it makes little sense to me.

For instance... Catholicism has a long history of meditation practices which parallels eastern practices. This has fallen from the mainstream in most cases, BUT there are Catholic Zen masters and still many of these practices going on depending on where you are... I HATE what I know of the Catholic church growing up [just what I know from friends]... but that's just my experience... and it doesn't mean anything in relation to other Catholics I may run into or the root teachings.

I agree that to many, the term religion connotes a dogma, doctrine, ritual, a sacred scripture and a mission to save all unbelievers, and an attitude I'm right and if you do not agree with me, you are wrong. But THAT affect one bit the potential value of many of the religious teachings.
