Earthquake Rocks Central Alaska

11/03/2002 18:26:18 EST

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - A major earthquake rocked a sparsely poplulated area of
interior Alaska on Sunday. There were no immediate reports of major damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colo., measured the quake at 7.9; the Alaska
Tsunami Warning Center recorded it at 7.5.

The epicenter of the quake was 90 miles south of Fairbanks, and was strongly felt in
Anchorage about 270 miles to the south.

The quake hit at 1:13 p.m Alaska Standard Time, said Bruce Turner of Alaska
Tsunami Warning Center.

"It shook for a good 30 seconds," he said.

Within minutes of the quake, Turner said he had heard no reports of damage on land.
The earthquake also did not generate a tsunami.

Jill Woster said she was driving between Fairbanks and her home in North Pole when
the quake began.

"The car felt like it was going to fall apart," she said. Woster arrived home to find
pictures off the walls and on the floor, along with glassware.

Earthquakes above magnitude 7 are considered major - capable of widespread, heavy
damage.

The "Good Friday" earthquake in Alaska that left 131 people dead in 1964 measured
8.5 on Richter scale. Current measures put the magnitude at 9.2.

It shows folks on the dock and then the ship or water disappear and then the water comes back flooding the dock and taking the cruise ship down the main street and back into the harbor...

That magnitude is just a preliminary report. Other reports are saying 7.5. More damage reports stating to come in: Pictures fallen off walls, fuel tanks knocked over, etc. I was 175 miles away and my clock radio fell off the windowsill. Here's a map showing where quakes have been happening lately...
