Unemployment is reportedly above 10% where I live. It is actually much worse than that but if you have not been actively searching for a job you are taken off the list. Anyway, I never said the chart was accurate. It's just another way to look at things. Like this from Harry Newton:technologyinvestor.com 8:30 AM Friday, November 1, 2002: The economy went up 3.1% in the third quarter. Pretty good. Economists, a dour bunch, always looking for the black lining, found car sales. Without car sales, growth would have been 1.5%. Not enough, they intoned. But still better than going backwards, which some feared. The double dip and all that. So we did OK. This quarter's going to be awful, they say, because the consumer is running out of steam -- the consumer has been fired, has too much debt, has his new car, his house refinancing or has just seen his 401 (K) report. Fact is they (the economists) have zero idea. Famous statements about them: + 93% of economists have been correct in predicting nine out of the last five recessions. + An economist is an expert who will know tomorrow why the things he predicted yesterday did not happen today. But will happen tomorrow. + Why did God create Economists? To make weather forecasters and astrologists look good. My personal take: The economy is improving because the consumer continues to spend. Business earnings are coming back, not because of booming demand, but because businesses are slicing operating costs -- like firing people and closing redundant factories and offices -- and aligning themselves to eke out profits at lower sales. This is not an environment that is hugely positive for the stockmarket. But it is positive. The major problem remains. Valuations are out of whack for slower growth. Here are the numbers from today's Wall Street Journal. This year looks a lot better than last year. There is more... technologyinvestor.com Goodnight everyone! RtS
