Apropos Mars, NASA is doing everything in its power to prove, show, argue, speculate, you name it, that life exists there --- or, if not exactly life, then its precursors. The whole caper is about money, money, money and, clearly, the more they can show that life exists there or did exist or can exist then NASA believes the US gov will come up with the necessary.

For my money, if you excuse the pun, I believe it would be better if the US were to piss its funds on Mars, looking for what doesn't exist, than making war all over the place. Unfortunately for Daniel Goldin, NASA's head, Bush & Co prefer to listen to Perle and Wolfowitz than to him.
