If they had adopted Chinese marketization, while retaining political control, they might have gone on forever. And become a non-threat. It's capitalism vs communism. Capitalism wins. The other litany of excuses that have been constructed for USSR collapse are self-congratulatory and designed to justify the excesses and policy mistakes driven by unrestrained military expenditures and excessive reliance on covert agencies and unaccountable individuals. It's the military's job to protect this country against threats. And if it's overfunded and not busy, like militaries throughout history, it will construct threats. The job of Congress is to hold government, including the military, accountable. That is not being done.
