the trick is that in some email clients, highlighting the message is, in effect, selecting it, and that's enough to open it.

at least that's the problem in messenger, which necessitates one having to close the preview pane. once that happens, then highlighting the message does not open it automatically.

but nemer is asking about outlook and i am responding about messenger, so i should just be quiet.
